JOI As A Genre & An Interview With NSFW Audio Creator, Cinnnamon Sugar

The old adage “sex sells” traces its origins back to 1871. However, the concept has always been true with sex work and porn having existed in nearly every known civilization. One of the more interesting genres in this industry is known as JOI. We talked with voice actress, Cinnnamon Sugar, who creates JOI, NSFW, and SFW audios.

Question: What originally got you into creating audio porn?

Answer: I’d always been told I had a beautiful voice. Various circumstances in my life led me to a rough place. I actually enjoyed ASMR audios before and figured I could do it. I originally only planned to do ASMR and keep it all SFW, but I eventually discovered JOI and liked it because it didn’t require me to push any boundaries I was uncomfortable with. After posting them on Reddit, I began to build a following. Now, a year later, I have a Patreon and am booking as a voice actress and have thirty Patreon subscribers.

What is JOI?

JOI stands for “jerk off instructions” and usually involves a woman (though sometimes a man) telling the listener how to masturbate. The genre–as implied by the name–primarily caters to men. In fact, Cinnnamon Sugar said, “I had no idea what JOI was until I joined the community.” Within her own audience, this is true, with mostly men subscribing to her Patreon and consuming her audio. Though, she does note that she does have a few female subscribers.

There is also JOI for women. “There are a few men who make a lot of money doing this,” Cinnnamon Sugar said. Though, audio does also lend itself well to the LGBT community by offering many non-gendered audios. On the most popular audio porn Subreddit, you will see tags like “No genitals mentioned” and “F4A” standing for “female for anyone.”

Scripted vs. Improv

“Many people hire writers or write their own scripts,” Cinnnamon said. “I mostly do improv, but may write a short script. Sometimes writers will hire me to do a script or give me one.” The scripted versions tend to fall within the roleplay category which is a popular category seen in all porn genres. Though, there are also several subgenres of JOI.

• Masturbation: Some JOI creators do actually masturbate when recording. This can capture additional sounds and can help it feel more authentic. However, this is not strictly necessary and many people creating JOI content are simply voice actors.

• Hypnosis: Hypnosis JOI can involve anything from having a hypnotic feel to having hypnosis as part of the roleplay or narrative. This can also involve a good amount of ASMR, but is a fairly niche subgenre.

• Ramble Fap: Whether masturbating or not, in this type of JOI or porn audio, the speaker is rambling while also masturbating. In the case of JOI, it may simulate mutual masturbation or digital sex.

• Reading: Other voice artists take a different approach and read from a book or poetry while masturbating. This subgenre is appealing because the speaker’s voice will usually change when they orgasm or at different points. It is less about the story or poetry and more about the masturbation.

• Visual: JOI is not only limited to audio porn. Cinnnamon said, “There are people who make JOI with visuals. One I know of is an attractive lady who lays down and only shows from the neck up, while also providing jerk off instructions.

The normal porn genres also exist within audio porn and JOI. If it’s a category on Pornhub, there is likely an equivalent one in audio form. In fact, some genres can be expanded more in audio form than within a small porn studio. Often, audio concepts better embrace fantasy and sci-fi and incorporate it in a more realistic way.

Question: Why are JOI and audio porn in general so popular?

Answer: It leaves more to the imagination than traditional porn does. The porn industry has been and is catered to men. The women are always gorgeous and the focus of the video while the man is less attractive or even barely shown.

Audio porn and JOI are still largely catered to men. According to BedBible’s porn statistics, 93% of boys are exposed to porn before the age of 18 in comparison to 62% of girls. At any given time, men are four times as likely to have watched porn in the last month than women. However, there are some statistics that may show why audio porn and JOI have grown in popularity, especially during COVID-19.

For example, women are much more likely to read or listen to their porn than men. With both men and women consuming audio porn at higher rates, it is no wonder why it has taken off. JOI in particular became more popular during COVID-19. One of the top searches on Pornhub in 2021 included the words “How to” which would likely lead to many jerk off instruction videos or audios.

Question: Where are people finding and consuming audio porn?

Answer: I started on Reddit because that was where I had found it in the past, but once I started I discovered it was also really popular on Twitter. While those are the platforms I focus on, it is on YouTube, Tumblr, and several others. Many creators also have some sort of subscription platform now as well like Patreon, OnlyFans, etc.

The Future Of Porn

Throughout history, porn has always included erotica, art, and photographs. When video became a viable option, porn tapes could be found in some video stores and sex shops. However, the internet completely changes the landscape for what is possible.

During the interview, Cinnnamon Sugar mentioned that she did voice acting for an erotic video game. The popularity of erotic video games–mostly online–makes sense due to the way adults do and want to consume porn. 

Firstly, many porn games are free or were crowdsourced, so it is a more ethical free porn option than many video sites. Games also take advantage of a popular genre in porn–animation–which allows for things not possible in real life. It also uses visuals and sounds just like a traditional porn video, but in a way that is more engaging and fun because it does have game elements like solving puzzles or accomplishing a goal.

Virtual reality is also offering new porn opportunities. It can allow for a more immersive and private viewing experience. Some games are designed to leak into real life by having couples play them together and lead to actual sex acts.

The future of porn appears to be more immersive and personalized. It may include making a request for a favorite independent creator or playing a roleplay video game, it appears that eventually porn will be less produced and come more from individual creators like Cinnnamon.

JOI can also include a real-life element. While it is logical that those consuming JOI content actually follow along with the instructions, there are JOI audios that instruct users to use a sex toy and how.
